openZDM Third General Assembly: Empowering the Manufacturing Industry

Hosted by the Tecnalia, Third General Assembly Meeting of the openZDM project took place last June 13–14 in Madrid, Spain.

The openZDM Third General Assembly

The openZDM project that aims to redefine manufacturing processes and enhance product quality, recently held its Third General Assembly. This gathering brought together industry leaders, researchers, and innovators from 18 institutions to discuss the latest developments in the field and pave the way for a future of efficient, defect-free manufacturing.

The main goal of the assembly was to share the achieved milestones of the first year of the project, showcasing the commitment of stakeholders to work collectively towards a common goal. Attendees engaged in lively discussions, sharing their experiences and expertise to identify potential solutions that can accelerate the implementation of zero-defect manufacturing across diverse sectors of the industry.

openZDM platform: The innovative concept

The meeting started with Nikolas Nikolakis, the project coordinator of openZDM from the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation, delivering a speech to the entire consortium and extending his best wishes to all the participants for a productive and fruitful meeting. After that, representatives from Polytechnic University of Marche, AIMEN, Tecnalia and COMAU presented updates on each Non-Destructive Inspection system involved in the openZDM project.

Moreover, during the first day of the meeting, the representative from Netcompany-Intrasoft, openZDM’s key industrial partner for architecture development, framework, design and infrastructure discovered the concept behind the innovative openZDM platform.

openZDM pilots: Technological innovations empowering the future of manufacturing

openZDM pilots will showcase the implementation of the openZDM platform in live operational conditions, which makes them the key for the project’s final success. Therefore, the second day of the openZDM Third General Assembly Meeting was focused on providing context and comprehending the potential obstacles and collaborations among the five industrial pilots involved in the openZDM project. These pilots include Sonae Arauco, APTIV, Vidrala, Volkswagen Autoeuropa, and VDL Weweler

Each partner leading the specific pilot delved further into the examination of their production systems’ unique characteristics and engaged in discussions regarding the most suitable methods to assess their effectiveness in practical operational scenarios.

As the communication and dissemination leader, F6S closed the meeting by presenting the current status of the key performance indicators and emphasizing the importance of the strategy towards enhancing the awareness of the openZDM project.

Overcoming challenges and ensuring adoption

While the openZDM project holds immense promise, it also faces various challenges in its path to widespread adoption. The Third General Assembly served as a forum to address these challenges openly and discuss strategies to overcome them. By encouraging open dialogue and collaboration, the assembly facilitated the development of practical roadmaps for the successful implementation of zero-defect manufacturing across industries.

After a two-day long meeting, all partners are eager to continue working together on the final goal – the creation of an open platform for realizing zero defects in cyber-physical manufacturing that will empower and facilitate the future of sustainable manufacturing.
